Fuel cells

Series production

Fuel cell production is now part of our day-to-day business with various ongoing projects in different sectors. As a system supplier, we cover the entire value chain of the following production processes:

  • bipolar plates (BPP)

  • membrane electrode assembly (MEA)

  • stack and system assembly

  • test benches, including production data acquisition and control

Production at a 1 Hz cycle is already possible today. The production capacity is therefore over 15 million cells and thus more than 50,000 stacks per year on a single system

MEA - Production

In order to meet the complexity requirements of our customers, our systems offer a high degree of flexibility with regard to different designs and cycle times. Our systems support you in accelerating and flexibilizing your MEA series production, individually tailored to your needs.

Fast or flexible? Small or large?

We can do both with our manual or pick-and-place solutions or roll-to-roll processes for high-volume production

Metallic BPP production

The production of metallic bipolar plates is a complex process that requires complex production systems. Mapping the entire value chain for the manufacture of a BPP is therefore a central challenge for both BPP producers and production line manufacturers on the way to the finished fuel cell.

thyssenkrupp Automation Engineering has therefore been cooperating with the companies Andritz and Schuler for several years in order to be able to offer you complete production systems for mapping the entire value chain of metallic BPP production from a single source.

Graphite BPP production

The production of graphitic bipolar plates is a similarly complex process to that of metallic BPPs, but different.

The material processing of the compound through to the BPP requires sophisticated production systems across the entire value chain. Together with our partners, we master the solutions for you.

From powder to sheet, we can do it!

Stack and system assembly

Our customers are often confronted with a variety of quality-related challenges during stack assembly, such as precise alignment and fast stacking. Thanks to our many years of experience, we can solve these challenges in the best possible way.

We also support our customers as a reliable system supplier for system assembly, which includes all process steps that comprise the assembly of auxiliary systems (balance-of-plant) for the operation of a stack.

Test and inspection technology

In production, the delivery of safe, functional and tolerance-compliant components has top priority. However, the test equipment required to detect NOK components is often cost-intensive and does not add value in itself. Determining suitable quality gates is therefore a decision with far-reaching consequences for any production planning. Particularly where components are still subject to continuous (further) development and production processes and parameters have yet to be established, a closer inspection of components can often be profitable. This can prevent expensive production errors - or, in the worst case, field returns.
